How to interpret recorded crime data

Police.uk publishes incidents that were recorded. That is not all crime, and small counts are jumpy.

Last reviewed 14 August 2026

Recorded crime is the official public picture of what police logged. Locations are approximate. Not every crime is reported, and recording practices differ.

Counts before percentages

In a quiet area, a handful of extra incidents can swing a percentage. Read the count and the period, not only the headline rate.

How to use it

Use it as context for a safety conversation, alongside what you see on a viewing and what local people tell you.

It is not a personal risk score, and it is not a comment on the people who live there.
